Kanda Matsuri is one of Japan’s three major festivals, which dates back to Edo era. There is main ceremony every 2 years. As a part of the ceremony, you can see a parade of portable shrines and floats marching through the 30 kilometers streets in Kanda and Nihombashi area. It is indeed, a stunning sight to see 100 portable shrines marching into Kanda Shrine.

Gorgeous portable shrines parading in electric town of Akihabara
In Kanda Matsuri, there will be a parade consist of about 100 portable shines and a couple of thousands people, which will proceed in electric town of Akihabara. Men in hanten (workman’s short coat) with the name of their local community screened at the back and hachimaki (headband) carry portable shrines shouted passionately, ‘seiya, seiya!’
Wadaiko (Japanese drums) Festival
Teams which play the wadaiko gather from all over Japan and compete at a temporary stage in Miyamoto Park next to Kanda Shrine. Also there will be a market selling local foods from many different places in Japan.
Enjoy Noh (ancient Japanese performance) *fee require
In Kanda Matsuri, a noh play called ‘Myoujin noh / Yuugen no hana’ is performed. Free brochure explaining the play in English will be provided for foreign tourists. There are two types of tickets, day ticket and advance ticket. The day tickets will be sold from 10 A.M. in the morning at the reception in the ground of Kanda Shrine, but it likely to be sold out early. So we recommend you to purchase an advance ticket.
Recommended viewing spot
It is best to go to in front of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Department store. This is because there will be two parades of portable shrines in this festival. The two parades will meet in front of the department store. Therefore, you can enjoy viewing both parades here. The two groups will reach there at around 16:30. It is expected that it will be overly crowded before and after the meeting time, so you should go there and take up space earlier.
Venue: Kanda Myoujin Shrine
There are several stations close to the venue. Regardless of which station you come from, it won’t take you more than 10 minutes to get to Kanda Myoujin Shrine.
