Though most tourists usually use subways and JR as the main means of transportation in Japan, but that does not apply to every place. If you want to visit tourist spots in Kyoto, it is more convenient to use buses. Here, we are going to introduce how to ride a bus in Kyoto.
1. Search for the bus you should ride
Search the bus number which goes to your desired destination and where you are now on the Route Map. Please wait at the bus stop.

“東山通” is the Street Name and “201” is the bus number.
The destination is Gion(祇園) and Hyakumanben(百万遍).
2.Please enter the bus from the rear door
If you ride a bus whose number is on a white background, please take a ticket from the machine.
3.Push the button before the bus reaches your stop
The display in front of the bus shows the next bus stop; alternatively you can also hear the announcement. When the bus is approaching your stop, please push the button (which looks like the picture below). The button is basically all placed around the bus.
4.Pay the fare in the front and get off the bus from the front door
・You should prepare the exact amount of money because the fare collection box doesn’t give changes.
・Please exchange your money in advance with the change machine on the payment box. The change available are only coins and 1,000 yen bills.
・The fare is JPY 230 within “Flat Fare Zone” (The details will be described later). But outside the zone, the fare increases as the distance increases. Please check the ticket number and the display.
・One-Day Pass can be used within Flat Fare Zone. (The details will be described later)
・IC cards are available. Please tap the card on the card reader.
Flat Fare Zone
The bus whose number is on orange or blue background goes within the Flat Fare Zone. In the route, the fare is JPY 230. The bus whose number is on a white background goes outside the flat fare zone. Please check the fare on the display at the front.
You can use Kyoto City Bus and Kyoto Bus any times within the Flat Fare Zone. For the first time, you put the pass into the card slot when you get off the bus. After the first time, please show the pass with the date to the driver. The pass can be bought from any city bus, subway information, or ticket office.
